The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish New Mexico Wildlife Editor is responsible for producing numerous publications and print materials to keep our customers apprised and educate them on the Department’s rules and regulations, mission, programs, goals and objectives and state laws related to wildlife conservation. This position is essential in producing documents in Spanish and English to expand effective outreach with constituents. This position is vital to producing the publications and providing the information generations of hunters, anglers and trappers expect and rely on. The Department’s Editor reports to the Communications Director within the Department’s Information and Education Division.
1. Publications ¿ Incumbent will write, edit, design, and produce print-ready and web-ready versions of English and Spanish publications. Publications can include the Department’s New Mexico Wildlife Magazine, monthly Wildlife Newsletter, Special Edition Newsletters, Social Media outlets, the Department’s annual reports and other Department publications on strict deadlines. The incumbent will also assist in researching, writing, editing and distributing news releases, consistent with AP style, to keep our customers apprised of the Department’s issues. The incumbent is required to utilize technical skills and knowledge in design software programs such as Adobe Creative Suite; InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel. The incumbent will be required to produce professional photography and illustrations for Department publications.
2. Photography and videography ¿ Incumbent will provide professional photography and videography support for the Information and Education Division of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The incumbent will photographically capture digital images that illustrate the Department’s programs, activities and issues. The incumbent will maintain Department camera equipment, ensuring it is in working order and report photographic needs and issues to the supervisor.
3. Editorial Content ¿ Incumbent will be required to write, edit and ensure AP standards in grammar and style are followed. The incumbent will support the Department’s public information efforts to convey the Department’s mission, programs, goals and objectives by disseminating information to, and conducting activities with, diverse external and internal customers through the use of various communication methods, including but not limited to: TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, electronic media, social media, press releases, media interviews, trade shows, events and educational outreach.
4. Outreach ¿ The incumbent will participate in Department outreach activities, including but not limited to: The Outdoors Show, fishing clinics, Hunter Education classes and events, National Archery in the Schools Program, Youth Shooting Sports Program, Aquatic Resource Education activities, Wildlife Conservation Education Programs, fairs, tradeshows and a wide variety of wildlife conservation program to assist all Department Programs and to document the Department’s efforts through written work, photography and videography.
The purpose of this position is to inform citizens of the services and opportunities offered by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and to promote the values of hunting, fishing, trapping and wildlife conservation through printed publications, news releases, photography, interviews and other educational and personal interactions with the public. The incumbent provides professional copy-editing skills, utilizing Associated Press standards in grammar and style, on the execution of all work and will use various communication methods, including but not limited to: TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, electronic media, social media, press releases, media interviews, trade shows, events and educational outreach to provide public relations support.
The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of hunting, fishing, trapping, and wildlife conservation and wildlife biology. This position works on diverse projects and the ability t effectively manage time and meet deadlines is imperative to the success of the incumbent. The ability to build relationships with a diverse group of customers, both internally and externally, is greatly needed. Professional level experience in the production of accurate publications, news releases, photos, videos, and educational programs is highly sought after.
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in marketing and two (2) years of experience in journalism, advertising and and/or marketing. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results.
Work will be performed primarily in an office setting, but on occasion will be performed in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions and in close proximity to fish and wildlife. Weekend and varied hours occasionally will be required for this position. Must be able to lift 60 pounds and operate computers and photography equipment.
