Job Description

About Reuters

As the news and media division of Thomson Reuters, Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news provider, employing some 2,500 journalists in 200 locations around the world. Each year, Reuters delivers over 2 million unique news stories, over 1.5 million news alerts, over 814,000 pictures and images, over 129,000 video stories and 100 investigative reports. Founded in 1851, it is committed to the Trust Principles of independence, integrity and freedom from bias. With unmatched coverage in over 16 languages, and reaching billions of people every day, Reuters provides trusted intelligence that powers humans and machines to make smart decisions. It supplies business, financial, national and international news to professionals via desktop terminals, the world’s media organizations, industry events and directly to consumers at Reuters.com.

With an unparalleled reputation and a history for producing award-winning content, Reuters continues to strengthen its competitive advantage with its work on “Newsroom of the Future”, helping the organization serve its diverse audiences even better and reinforcing how distinctive Reuters is in today’s news ecosystem. The five key attributes that distinguish Reuters from its competitors include:

  • Global reach:
more than any other news team, Reuters is on the ground everywhere and serves billions of people a day. This includes 780 TV broadcasters in over 100 countries, over 2,000 media customers in 128 countries, and over 1,000 publishing clients including 8 of the top 10 newspapers globally and every major US TV network.

  • Global perspective:
as a news operation, Reuters is fundamentally non-national. Therefore, unlike most competitors, Reuters does not reflect one country’s perspective and then project it outward but rather approaches its work with a global mindset.

  • The Trust Principles:
the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles are truly differentiating and are one of the main reasons why journalists chose to work at Reuters. Reuters’ commitment to “integrity, independence and freedom from bias” is especially powerful in a world in which threats to free speech and press freedom are on the rise globally, and in which some other news organizations have accepted censorship and self-censorship as necessary evils.

  • Diverse revenue streams:
Reuters benefits from diverse revenue streams through multiple customer groups, including Refinitiv, the terminals and data business spun out of Thomson Reuters in 2018; the news agency, which sells news primarily to other news organizations; and direct-to-consumer/professional platforms and other business lines. This diversity of customers, which generate revenue via long-term subscriptions, enables Reuters to support more journalists on the ground than any other independent news organization. It has also spurred the organization to build extraordinarily valuable domain expertise in business, economics and finance and to excel in general reporting across multiple media.

  • Speed:
Reuters is a “merchant of speed” in an age in which speed counts more than ever for all our customers, including those on digital and social-media platforms. Through a new global desk, a streamlined editing process, and a more systematic approach to technology, Reuters is poised to continue excelling in the intense competition to be first (while, of course, accurate!) in its coverage.

The Role

Based in New York or London, and reporting to the President of Reuters, Michael Friedenberg, the Editor-in-Chief, Reuters will provide editorial and operational leadership to the organization. They will manage the day-to-day editorial operations for a worldwide news agency consisting of 2,500 journalists in 200 locations worldwide that encompasses text and visual, which serves the various customers (Refinitiv, Thomson Reuters, Agency, Professional and Machine) and platforms by which our editorial is experienced. The Editor-in-Chief is required to travel globally — to visit news bureaus, engage with governments in support of Reuters journalists abroad and support sales efforts as appropriate.

The Editor-in-Chief must have a deep understanding of Reuters business and of the media industry and be a strong and constructive partner to the commercial team, with the common goal of driving growth without compromising editorial independence.
